Insurance Status
You can check the status of your insurance, driver license and vehicle registration related to that insurance online. You cannot do this by mail, phone or in a DMV office.
You will need your
- 10-digit document number
- vehicle plate number
If you received a letter or order from the DMV related to your auto liability insurance, your document number and plate number can be found on the letter. See a sample Insurance Letter or Order.
Changing or Cancelling
Insurance Coverage
Your insurance company should report a change of insurance company or coverage electronically to the DMV. If they do not, see what steps you should take if you change, cancel, or reinstate your insurance coverage.
If you move away from New York State you must surrender your plates and registration before the New York State liability insurance is canceled.
