Working for DMV
More Than Just Licenses and Registrations

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is more than just an office to get a driver license or renew a vehicle registration. Our employees are involved in a broader range of activities and programs which include:

  • Educating and promoting highway safety through the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC).
  • Protecting consumers through the inspections of automotive and body repair facilities.
  • Ensuring the safety and protection of citizens' identities through issuing secure documents and investigating fraud and auto theft activities.
  • Protecting personal information with secure computer technology.

In addition to working for a progressive and dynamic agency, we are proud to offer many advancement opportunities, great employee benefits, and the opportunity to join a team of dedicated individuals who serve the people of our state.

The Department of Motor Vehicles is committed to diversity and equal opportunity, and to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. We are proud to be an equal-opportunity workplace, and we encourage all qualified individuals to apply, including people with disabilities or any other protected category under the law. Our goal as an employer is to reflect the diverse identities, experiences, and geographies of the communities and customers we serve.

Applying for a Job at DMV
Applications and Exams

Apply for an Open Position

As part of the statewide NY HELPS (Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide) initiative, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is actively recruiting candidates for many permanent positions, from entry-level to professional traineeships. These positions do not require you to take a civil service written test. They only require that you meet the minimum qualifications of the position, making it much easier to enter civil service!

Most positions in the DMV are filled through competitive exams. These examinations assess candidates' knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for performing the job. Exams are open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications indicated on the exam announcements, and nearly all exams require a non-refundable application processing fee. After an exam, applicants' names are added to an eligible list and they are invited to interview as roles become available.

DMV Welcomes You
DMV is Committed to Being a Model Employer for People with Disabilities

Executive Order 31, issued by Governor Kathy Hochul on July 27, 2023, commits New York State to being a model employer for people with disabilities. As part of that mandate, every executive-controlled state agency is required to issue and maintain a strategic plan that outlines its strategy to increase the number of people with disabilities it hires and retains.

Our plan to carry out Executive Order 31 is made up of three main objectives:

  • make current workplaces accessible for both current and potential employees, interns, apprentices, and fellows,
  • pro-actively connect to people with disabilities for open positions,
  • and communicate to the public, other agencies, and stakeholders about increased support and welcoming of people with disabilities.
