Apply to Be a Motor Vehicle Inspector
To become a motor vehicle inspector certified by the Department of Motor Vehicles in New York State, you must
- be 17 years old or older
- have a valid New York State DMV Identification Number (Client ID Number) from your New York State driver license, learner permit, or non-driver photo identification card. If you are not a New York State resident, you can get a New York State DMV Client ID Number by completing a Request for Photo Image (PDF) (ID-5VSCI) and having your photo taken at any New York State DMV office.
- comply with the qualifications listed in Part 79 of the DMV Commissioner's Motor Vehicle Inspection Regulations (PDF) (CR-79)
- complete the online application at https://www.nyvip3.com/ under the Inspectors menu option.

DMV takes 6 to 8 weeks to process an application.
Refunds
If you take the inspector certification training class but fail the test, DMV will refund you the $15 certification fee.
